The wines of Château Trotanoy
In the hands of the Maison Jean-Pierre Moueix (owner of Pétrus) since 1953, the Château Trotanoy is considered to be one of the finest Pomerols. The Château has conserved it's original superficie (since 1953) of 7,2 hectares and has a terroir divided between gravel on clay and deep black clay on iron dirt subsoil. Today it is cultivated according to "l'agriculture raisonnée" and the vines are divided between Merlot (90%) and Cabernet franc (10%). The technical director of the Château, as with Pétrus, was entrusted to Jean-Claude Berrouet for over 44 years and in 2007, his right-hand man, Eric Murisasco, took his place. The Château produces two red wines, the first being the "Grand Vin de Trotanoy", and since 2009, a second wine called « Espérance de Trotanoy ». Thanks to its ideally located vineyard, 1 km to the west of Pétrus, in great vintages the Grand Vin de Trotanoy is often on par with the most prestigious of the appellation: 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1995, 1990, 1989, 1982, 1975, 1971, 1970, 1961. Its aging capacity in bottle is exemplary (from 10 to 25 years and more), and it is advisable not to broach during its first 10 years in order to enjoy its exemplary balance and regularity at maturity. It has discerned excellent ratings and reviews from international critics, some of which came close to a perfect score on several occasions. The second wine, « l’Espérance de Trotanoy », comes from a selection of gravelly plots in the north-eastern part of the vineyard, and can be drunk within 5 to 8 years. However, it retains the depth, complexity and power characteristic of the Trotanoy terroir. It allows one the opportunity to discover Trotanoy for a lower price, as the Grand Vin is significantly more expensive.
